The Research and Collections Resource Facility (RCRF) is a new high density library storage facility that houses less frequently accessed library materials, research collections, and the University of Alberta Archives.

The design of the data communication system throughout the building was looked at in two (2) parts: first the office and book processing area was meant to have flexibility with work stations to be setup at any of the data outlets locations to provided data services as well as VOIP. The warehouse / collections space was designed so that WiFi could be accessed within the high density shelving units (~9.1m high and 60m long) to help manage and locate the library and archive material as well as providing future potential for a fully automated storage and retrieval system. Additionally, the facility also had to meet the requirements of Moveable Cultural Property as well as providing LED lighting throughout to ensure that none of the archives were exposed to high levels of UV light.
