Senior Electrical Engineer

Location: Vancouver
Start Date: Immediately
Duration: Full-time

SMP Engineering is currently looking for Senior Electrical Engineers for our Vancouver Office. As a senior electrical engineer you will have the ability to be the engineer of record for the electrical design of the various projects for the company. This position requires a level of direct and sustained supervision of other professional engineers/technologists. This position requires application of mature engineering knowledge in planning and conducting projects having scope for independent accomplishment and coordination of the difficult and responsible assignments. Assigned problems make it necessary to modify established guides, devise new approaches, apply existing criteria in new manners, and draw conclusions for comparative situations.

Key Responsibilities for:
  • Client relationship building and management including, but not limited to, taking part in business development activities, proposal preparation, organizing staff resources, establishing project budgets and schedules, etc.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and internal team in the design and specification development of electrical, lighting and communications systems projects
  • Lead and Contribute to the successful design, production, coordination and management of electrical, lighting and communications systems projects
  • Develop power distribution, lighting and auxiliary systems designs such as single line diagrams, wiring schematics, photometric layouts, grounding details
  • Prepare and review wire sizing, voltage drop and conduit capacity calculations
  • Prepare technical reports, tender documentation and field support (including commissioning/site inspection)
  • Ensure that engineering deliverables (e.g., drawings, specifications, analysis, budget estimates) comply with applicable regulations, standards, corporate procedures and sound engineering practices
  • Review drawings to ensure accuracy, completeness and quality of technical information and project documentation in accordance with QA/QC programs
  • Ensure that project deliverables are met in a timely manner to a high quality including engineering stamped drawings and preparing final reports
  • Direct and mentor intermediate and junior staff
Experience / Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and a graduate of an accredited university
  • Registration as a P.Eng. (BC) is required
  • A minimum of 10 years relevant experience in design and assessment of new and upgraded electrical (power distribution, power quality, UPS, lighting, etc.) and peripheral systems (security, life safety, instrumentation and controls, communications, IT) for institutional, commercial and industrial buildings
  • Detailed knowledge of provincial, federal and international electrical and building codes
  • Experience in project management
  • Business development experience or potential to be part of the business development aspect of the organization
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and share ideas
  • Self-motivated; can work well individually and as part of a team
Other Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Strong relationship with existing clients in Vancouver and surrounding areas including Architects, Health Care Authorities, Post-secondary Institutions, and Municipal clients
  • Strong working knowledge of Electrical Safety Code
  • Proficiency with engineering software including AutoCAD, REVIT, and AGI32 lighting design software
  • Experience performing electrical site inspections, construction supervision and contract administration
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills applicable both internally with project delivery staff as well as externally with project partners (clients, consultants, contractors and regulatory authorities)

Junior/Intermediate Electrical Designer

Location: Edmonton
Start Date: Negotiable
Duration: Full-time Permanent

SMP Engineering is an Electrical Consulting firm with offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge and Vancouver, specializing in commercial and institutional electrical consulting. We are seeking a self-motivated Junior/Intermediate Electrical Designer in our Edmonton office.

You will be responsible for:
  • Preparing electrical construction drawings using AutoCAD and REVIT
  • Preparation of electrical specifications
  • Working closely with senior designers toward efficient and accurate completion of projects
  • Representing the company at site inspections and client meetings
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Diploma from an accredited technical institution
  • Strong AutoCAD/Revit computer skills
  • Strong team work, leadership and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Demonstrated effective organization and time management skills
