Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At SMP, we believe diverse perspectives drive stronger ideas, better outcomes, and a more innovative engineering industry.

Inspired by APEGA’s 30 by 30 initiative, which aims for women to represent 30 percent of professional engineers by 2030, we proudly support this goal through our Women in Engineering Scholarship. We have pledged $50,000 over five years to empower female students pursuing engineering careers at the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta.

Our commitment extends to ongoing initiatives that promote equity and access in engineering. Each year, we offer paid internships to students from local post-secondary institutions, helping bridge the gap between education and professional practice. We have supported recognition of student leadership and academic excellence through programs such as the Innovator Award at the University of Lethbridge. We also previously mentored senior engineering students at the University of Calgary through multi-disciplinary capstone projects, providing hands-on guidance and industry insight.

In 2025, we launched SURGE, an internal mentorship program designed to support and empower talented women at SMP. This program focuses on community-building, allyship, technical and professional growth, and fostering the confidence and leadership potential of women across the firm. We also recognize and celebrate key moments that advance gender equity in our industry, including International Women’s Day, which in 2025 featured a panel discussion with industry leaders, and International Women in Engineering Day. We are also proud Gold Sponsors of Women in Consulting Engineering (WCE), a community dedicated to supporting and empowering women in engineering and increasing gender diversity and inclusion across the industry.

We proudly support The Alex Community Health Centre, an organization that shares our commitment to dignity, inclusion, and providing compassionate support to those facing complex challenges. Through our two-year partnership, we have raised over $40,000 via our biennial Mini Putt tournament and regularly volunteer in their community kitchen. This collaboration helps provide accessible support for those facing mental or physical health challenges, addiction, food insecurity, and housing instability, advancing our shared mission of equity and inclusion.

Each year, we take time to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honors the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. We use this time to reflect, learn, and recommit ourselves to reconciliation.

Through these efforts and more, we’re helping build a more inclusive future; one that values talent, encourages growth, and reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.
